To the south of Jambudvīpa, outside the two Cakravāḍa ranges, lies the palace of King Yama. It is exactly six thousand yojanas square. There are seven tiers of balustrades, seven rows of trees, gardens, ponds, and all kinds of luscious fruits; fragrant breezes scent the air from afar, and various birds sing in harmony. Owing to his former unwholesome karma, throughout the six periods of day and night red molten copper juice naturally wells up before him. The palace immediately turns to iron. The hell wardens seize the king, throw him onto the burning iron ground, and pour the copper juice into his mouth. At that time, terrified, the king forms the thought: 'May I abandon this body and be reborn among humans, take right faith in the Tathāgata's Dharma, and go forth from the household life!' When he generates this wholesome thought, the palace turns back into the seven treasures, complete with the five desires (*Lokotpatti Sūtra*).
