屏山曰。儒佛之軒輊者。不唯佛者不讀儒書之過。亦儒者不讀佛書之病也。吾讀首楞嚴經。知儒在佛之下。又誦阿含等經。知佛似在儒下。至讀華嚴經。無佛無儒。無大無小。無高無下。能佛能儒。能大能小存泯自在矣。

Pingshan said: "The weighing of superiority between Confucianism and Buddhism is not only the fault of Buddhists not reading Confucian books, but also the failing of Confucians not reading Buddhist scriptures. When I read the Śūraṅgama-sūtra, I knew that Confucianism is beneath Buddhism; when I recited scriptures such as the Āgamas, I knew that Buddhism seemed to be beneath Confucianism; but when I came to read the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, there was neither Buddha nor Confucian, neither great nor small, neither high nor low—capable of being Buddha and capable of being Confucian, capable of being great and capable of being small, presences and absences are completely free."
