吳王權。問太傅闞澤曰。漢明何年佛教入中國。何緣不及東方。澤曰。永平年佛法初至。計今赤烏四年則一百七十年矣。永平十四年五嶽道士褚善信等乞與西僧觕法。於是善信負妄慚而死。其徒以屍歸葬南嶽。凡中國人例不許出家。無人流布。加之罹亂歲深方至本國。權曰。孔子制術典訓。教化來葉。老莊修身。自玩放浪山林。歸心澹泊。何事佛為。澤曰。孔老二教法天制用不敢違天。佛教諸天奉行不敢違佛。以此言之。優劣可見也（弘明集宗炳明佛論）。闞澤字德潤。會稽山陰人。好學居貧。為人傭書自給。所寫既畢。則能誦記。由是博覽群籍。虞翻見而稱之曰。闞生矯傑仲舒子雲流也澤官至太子太傅（吳誌）。

Quan, King of Wu, asked Grand Preceptor Kan Ze: "In which year of Emperor Ming of Han did Buddhism enter China? For what reason did it not reach the Eastern regions?" Ze said: "The Buddha-Dharma first arrived during the Yongping era; counting to the present, the fourth year of Chiwu, it has been one hundred and seventy years. In the fourteenth year of Yongping, Chu Shanxin and other Daoists of the Five Sacred Peaks requested to contest methods with the Western monks; thereupon Shanxin failed through his deception, dying of shame, and his disciples took his corpse back to be buried at the Southern Peak. As a rule, people of China were not permitted to leave household life, so there was no one to disseminate it; moreover, after enduring prolonged periods of disorder, it has only now reached our state." Quan said: "Confucius instituted methods and canonical instructions to educate and transform future generations. Laozi and Zhuangzi cultivated themselves, amusing themselves by wandering freely among the mountains and forests, returning their minds to tranquility. What need is there to serve the Buddha?" Ze said: "The two teachings of Confucius and Laozi model themselves on Heaven to institute functions, not daring to contravene Heaven; in Buddhism, the various devas uphold and practice it, not daring to contravene the Buddha. Judged by this, their superiority and inferiority can be seen." (Hongming ji, Zong Bing's Mingfo lun). Kan Ze, whose courtesy name was Derun, was a man of Shanyin in Kuaiji. He was fond of learning but lived in poverty, making a living by working as a scribe for others. Whenever he finished copying something, he was able to recite it from memory, and by this means he read widely among all kinds of texts. Yu Fan saw him and praised him, saying: "Master Kan is of the outstanding caliber of Dong Zhongshu and Yang Ziyun." Ze reached the office of Grand Preceptor to the Crown Prince. (Record of Wu)
