Imperial Eulogy on the Buddha's Tooth: A summer drought damaged the crops. In the sixth month, an imperial decree ordered that the Buddha's tooth of Xiangguo Monastery be welcomed to pray for rain within the palace. Immediately there was heavy rain. This Buddha's tooth relic had been sealed by the ancestral emperors; the Emperor opened it with his own hands and bathed it with rosewater from across the sea, obtaining one relic that emitted five-colored light. The Emperor placed it in a lapis lazuli bottle and composed a eulogy: / “The Three Sovereigns concealed their physical forms, all returning to the soil; / The Five Emperors hid their shapes, having already turned to dust. / Confucius is called the Supreme Sage within this realm; / Laozi in this world is also spoken of as true. / Their bodies buried, / One sees only empty, abandoned mounds.
