Dharma Master Zongzhou: His taboo name was Ziwen, and his style name was Zongzhou; he was a native of Siming. He received the Dharma from Reverend Wen of Beixi and came forth to preside over Baoyun Monastery. His knowledge of the doctrines and contemplations was vast and profound, and his observance of the vinaya rules was extremely strict. Ordinarily, he was reticent when speaking with others, but when he ascended the seat to lecture, his eloquence flowed like water poured from a steep eave, which nothing could stop. When he was near death, he finished lecturing on the Sixteen Contemplations Sūtra, and was about to immediately take his seat to bid farewell to the assembly and enter extinction. Someone addressed him, saying: 'Venerable Sir, you have not yet given instructions regarding your affairs after death; why do you announce your departure so suddenly?' The Master said: 'When a monk needs to go, he goes! Do not act like worldly men making calculations for sons and daughters and having affairs after death.' The assembly's earnest entreaties grew even more urgent. Thereupon he stepped down from the seat, returned to the abbot's quarters, and wrote down instructions item by item. Immediately, he joined his palms, invoked the names of the Four Sages of the Western Paradise, made his dedication and vows, and then passed into stillness. Relics from his cremation were innumerable (Biographies of Monks).
