In the wuzi year, the eighth year of the Zhizheng reign era, Yang Zai, whose courtesy name was Zhonghong, was a man of Hangzhou. In literary composition, he took vital energy (qi) as the primary element, establishing a style of his own; in poetry he was especially disciplined, drawing material from the Chu and Han eras while taking the poets of the Tang as his authority for rhythm. Academician Yu Ji, whose courtesy name was Bosheng, had a father, Ji, who was clear and pure in literary talent, and his mother, of the Yang family, was also versed in classical studies. His younger brother Pan, whose courtesy name was Zhongchang, and he both achieved the jinshi degree through their family education. Pan was known as Tao'an, and Ji was known as Shao'an. He once said, "When evaluating the compositions of examination candidates, one should promote those of highest merit, accepting them without an already fixed standard in mind; if a fixed standard is set in advance, the mind seeking out talent becomes narrow and erratic, and errors begin from that." In the eleventh month of this year, Fang Guozhen rebelled in Taizhou, gathering a crowd upon the sea. An official post was conferred on Zhen, but he did not assume it, and his influence grew increasingly rampageous.
