Yunfeng's Entry into Quiescence: Chan Master Yunfeng of the forty-third generation of Jingshan in Hangzhou, named Miaogao, was a native of Changxi in Gou. He received the full precepts from Master Yunmeng Ze. First he studied under Chan Master Chijue Chong; next he saw Wuzhun at Jingshan; and he also saw Yanxi at Yuwang, where he entered the abbot's quarters and held the keys to the scripture repository. One day Yanxi brought up: "It is like an ox passing through a window lattice. The head, horns, and four hooves have all passed through. Why is it that the tail cannot pass through?" The Master was abruptly awakened. He replied: "The whale drinks the sea water dry, completely exposing the coral branches." Yanxi approved of him. He appeared in the world to teach at Dalu in Nanxing, and moved to Quanzhong in Jiangyin and Hoshan Monastery in Zhaochuan. Cloud-robed monks arrived from all four directions, overflowing the three halls. By imperial order he was promoted to Jiangshan. In the gengchen year of Zhiyuan [1280] he was transferred to Jingshan. Having twice suffered fires, he rebuilt it with hardship and diligence. Later he went to court in the capital to discuss Chan in the imperial presence. The Emperor was exceedingly pleased and granted him meals in the bedchamber palace. In the sixth month of this year, at the beginning of the month, he gave an informal sermon to admonish and polish his students. On the seventeenth day, he recited a verse and passed away. His age was seventy-five, and his monastic age was fifty-nine. A stūpa was erected for him at the Juding Hermitage west of the monastery.
