Chan Master Quanshi, taboo name Zongle, styled Jitan, sobriquet Quanshi, was a native of Linhai in Taizhou. His clan name was Zhou, his father was Jifu, and his mother was Lady Ge. In his youth, he would sit cross-legged; at eight, he studied the Dharma under Master Xiaoyin Xin; at fourteen, he shaved his head; at twenty, he received full ordination. When Master Xin founded Longxiang, the Master accompanied him, devoting his mind to poetry and literature, being especially skilled in clerical script. Later, he visited Yuansou at Jingshan and managed the secretariat. He appeared in the world at Shuixi, transferred to Zhongzhu, and ascended Shuangjing as its fifty-fifth generation. An imperial edict ordered the Master, along with Dharma Master Dapu Qi of Yanfu, to annotate and explain the three sūtras—the Heart, Diamond, and Laṅkāvatāra Sūtras—proofread the canon, and compose and present Buddhist liturgical music. He traveled to the Western Regions to seek the Dharma, obtaining sūtras such as the Alaṃkāra-ratna-rāja and Mañjuśrī sūtras. He was appointed Exalter of the World in the Central Buddhist Registry, overseeing Buddhist affairs throughout the realm. He built Yuantong Hermitage on Chafeng in Fengyang, opening a room called 'Dwelling beneath the Pines'. He was granted the abbacy of Tianjie. Granted an imperial audience, he was bestowed a poem saying: 'When Venerable Le leaves here, to whom shall I ask of Chan? Morning and night, my mind is constantly before you.' Later, when he was permitted to return to Chafeng, the poem said: 'In loneliness, gaze at the bright moon; in leisurely ease, face the white clouds. You may now depart.' While crossing the river, he manifested illness and said to the assembly: 'The arising and ceasing of human life is like a single bubble on the sea. The bubble arises and ceases, returning again to water. Where is not a place of nirvāṇic cessation?' Having spoken, he called to his attendant: 'What about this?' The attendant was at a loss. The Master said, 'Painful!' and passed away. It was the fourteenth day of the ninth month. He was seventy-four years old. Following cremation, his relics were entombed in a stupa at Tianjie, to the right of Master Xin. Emperor Gaodi granted the Master an essay relieving him of office (recorded in the Huangming hufa lu) and composed one hundred and forty-five imperial poems matching his rhymes, addressing him as 'Venerable Le'. Emperor Chengzu composed an imperial portrait encomium, and he was bestowed the title Grand Master of Forthrightness and Decorum. His Dharma-heir disciples were Zhanran Xingyi and Zongqin.
