Chan Master Guzhuo, sobriquet Zuting, was a native of Songling. His mother observed the pure precepts, and from birth he knew no meat. In his youth, he recited the Lotus Sūtra from memory; at ten, he recited a full copy each day. At thirteen, he went to Rizhu Monastery, left household life, took the tonsure, and received full ordination. First, he visited Shiwu; southwards, he studied under Old Man Gumei, burning three fingers in succession. After nine years of diligent polishing, he was suddenly enlightened at a glance. Traveling to Baiyun, he was retained as head of the community. Later, he concealed his traces in crags and ravines for over thirty years. He had lines that ran: 'All my life I have loved secluded crags and valleys; / for twenty years, I have been too indolent to welcome or bid farewell.'
