In the twenty-fifth year of Hongwu, the year Renshen (1392), sūtra examinations were held to grant ordination certificates to monks. An edict ordered the Central Buddhist Registry to issue instructions to Buddhist registries across the realm to compile monastic registers, carve and print them, and distribute them to monasteries so that they might know one another, called the 'Universal Knowledge Board Registers' (zhouzhi bance). On the twenty-fifth day of the fourth month, the Crown Prince died and was given the posthumous title Yiwen. In the ninth month, the eldest legitimate grandson Yunwen was installed as Crown Prince, and Fang Xiaoru was appointed Instructor of Hanzhong. Xiaoru was a native of Ninghai in Taizhou, extraordinarily intelligent, with eyes gleaming like lightning; he could read ten lines of text at a single glance. Locals called him 'Little Hanzi'. Song Lian said of him: 'Your writings are not mere writings of this generation.' Taizu said to the Crown Prince: 'This is a serious man,' and also: 'An extraordinary man.' Later, at the end of the Jianwen era, he died for his loyalty. In winter, the Emperor suffered a severe fever and was critically ill. The imperial physicians administered medicines without effect. Suddenly, a barefoot monk came before the palace gates, saying that the Venerable of Heavenly Eyes and the Mad Immortal Zhou had sent him to present medicine. Looking at the medicine, one was called 'Warm-and-Cool Medicine', and the other was a piece of 'Warm-and-Cool Stone'. The prescription directed holding the stone in a basin to grind the medicine, pouring it into an eaglewood cup to drink. The Emperor took it; he ingested it during the wei hour (1–3 p.m.), and by the time lamps were lit, his entire body suffered spasms, which was the efficacy of the medicine. The medicine tasted as fragrant as sweet flag, and at the bottom of the cup, cinnabar condensed with extraordinary bright red color. That night his illness was cured, and his vitality grew stronger day by day. On the sixth day of the twelfth month, Yijian, Left Exalter of the World of the Central Buddhist Registry, and others reverently received the Imperial Edict at Fengtian Gate: 'How many eminent monks versed in the Buddha's Dharma and nature-principle have been found by inquiry in the various localities? Bring them to reside at Shanshi Monastery. Respect this.' On the twenty-first day of the twelfth month, following imperial approval, one hundred and forty-five copies of the Qingjiao lu (Record of Purifying the Teachings) were received and issued to the Prefectural Buddhist Registries in various localities, to be carved on printing blocks according to the text, printed, and distributed to the monasteries and monks under their jurisdiction.
