Elder Wuqu: Taboo name Rukong; a native of Xiushui, from the Shi clan. His secular sobriquet was Jingzhai. He devoted his mind to the internal scriptures and set his aspiration on the ancestral Way. Together with his friend Ji Fazhou, he traveled on pilgrimage for eight years. He visited Chan Master Yeweng Xiao, who instructed him to investigate the phrase "To what place does the one return?" Later, hearing the crow of a rooster, he had an awakening. He went to inquire and resolve his doubts, and received Yeweng's seal of approval. The verse for the transmission of the robe and Dharma read: / "Neither Dharma nor non-Dharma, / Neither nature nor non-nature, / Neither mind nor non-mind: / The transmission of mind-dharma to you is complete." / After shaving his head and dyeing his robes, the master resided at Jingwei. On the sixth day of the eighth month of the gengchen year of the Wanli era, he passed away at the age of ninety. His verse upon entering extinction read: / "Coming into life and departing in death are flowers in the sky; / Departing in death and coming into life are a dream. / The leather bag is handed over to Lord Bingding; / The white bones at the broken bridge follow the crowd. / Ha ha! / Today I play with the bright moon and the pure breeze."
