Chan Master Dazhi: Firm in setting his aspiration, he was rigorous and solemn in his practice. At first, he resided at Haichao Hermitage on Mount Putuo. In time, he expanded it into a grand monastery, accommodating more than a thousand people. Anyone from all across the realm who came to the mountain to offer incense to the Mahāsattva considered it fortunate to catch a single glimpse of him. Almsgiving and offerings were abundant, and his blessings and conditions were magnificent. The imperial court bestowed silk, and the Prince of Lu offered robes. He was veritable as a living Mahāsattva appearing on the mountain. He had a disciple named Tianran, who resided at Qianbusha, following his footsteps and footprints, ably reviving the ancestral teachings.
