At that time the brāhmaṇa Droṇa exhorted the multitudes, saying, “Worthy ones! For the long night you have received the Buddha’s teachings and precepts, and your mouths recite the words of the Dharma. You should always keep in mind the wish to bring peace to all living beings. How could you dispute over the Buddha’s relics and slaughter one another? The Tathāgata’s bodily remains were meant to bring widespread benefit. Since the relics are now present, they should simply be divided.” The assembly all praised this as good. Soon they deliberated again, asking, “Who is capable of dividing them?” All said, “The brāhmaṇa Droṇa is humane, wise, and impartial; he can be charged to divide them.” Then the kings ordered Droṇa, “Divide the Buddha’s relics for us equally into eight portions.” Thereupon Droṇa went to the place where the relics were. Having bowed with his head and face to the ground, he slowly stepped forward, took the Buddha’s upper tooth, and placed it separately to one side. Soon he sent an envoy bearing the Buddha’s upper tooth to Ajātaśatru, saying to the envoy, “In my words, report to the Great King: ‘Are your daily movements light and easy, and your steps vigorous? Is your yearning immeasurable as the relics have not yet arrived? Now I deliver to the envoy the Tathāgata’s upper tooth, and you may make offerings to it to comfort your longing. When the morning star appears, the division of the relics will be complete, and I shall personally convey them.’” At that time Droṇa took a jar that held about a dān and divided the relics equally into eight portions. He then said to the multitudes, “I pray that by general consent this jar may be granted to me; I wish to erect a stūpa in my house to make offerings.” All said, “How wise! This is knowing the proper time,” and they consented to give it to him. At that time, a person of the village of Pipphalivana said to the multitudes, “I beg for the burnt charcoal from the ground to erect a stūpa and make offerings.” All said, “Give it to him.” Then the people of the country of Kuśīnagara obtained a share of the relics, and right in their land they erected a stūpa to make offerings. The country of Pāvā, the country of Allakappa, the country of Rāmagāma, the country of Vethadīpa, the country of Kapilavastu, the country of Vaiśālī, and the country of Magadha with King Ajātaśatru, having each obtained a share of the relics, returned to their respective countries and erected stūpas to make offerings. The brāhmaṇa Droṇa took the jar and returned to erect a stūpa. The person of the village of Pipphalivana took the burnt charcoal from the ground and returned to erect a stūpa. At that time, eight stūpas were erected for the Tathāgata’s relics; the ninth was the Jar Stūpa; the tenth was the Charcoal Stūpa; and the eleventh was the Hair Stūpa from his birth. At what time was the Buddha born? He was born when the Puṣya star appeared. When the Puṣya star appeared, he went forth from home. When the Puṣya star appeared, he attained bodhi. When the Puṣya star appeared, he passed into extinction. On the eighth day the Buddha went forth from home; on the eighth day he attained bodhi; on the eighth day he entered extinction. In the second month the Tathāgata was born; in the second month the Buddha went forth from home; in the second month he attained bodhi; in the second month he entered nirvāṇa.
