Dharmanandin, translated here as Faxi (“Delight in the Dharma”), was a native of Tukhāra. Leaving worldly life in his boyhood, his intelligence matured early; he studied and chanted the scriptures, devoting his focus to perfecting his practice. He surveyed the Tripiṭaka completely and recited from memory the *Ekottarika-āgama*. He was vastly learned and knowledgeable, thoroughly synthesizing everything, so that far and near within his country, all submitted to and respected him. In his youth he observed foreign lands, traveling through various countries, and always held that the essential principle of propagating the Dharma was that what had not yet been heard should be proclaimed. Therefore, braving the shifting sands from afar, and harboring the treasures, he entered east, arriving in Chang'an during the Jianyuan era of the Fu clan.
