Shi Fayu was a native of Jizhou. He left household life at age fifteen as a disciple of Huishi. Huishi established an ascetic practice and cultivated dhūta deeds. Fayu maintained a valiant resolve and deeply understood this path. He constantly wished to emulate the exemplar of Bhaiṣajyarāja by burning his body as an offering. At that time Yao Xu, Prince of Jin of the illegitimate Qin, was stationed at Puban. Fayu reported his intention to Xu. Xu said, 'There are many ways to enter the path; why must you burn your body? I dare not firmly oppose you, but I hope you will think it over thrice.' Since Fayu's vow was deep and firm, he consumed fragrant powders, wrapped his body in cloth, recited the 'Chapter on Giving Up the Body' to the end, and set himself on fire. Among monastics and laypeople who watched, none failed to mourn and admire him. He was forty-five years of age at the time.
