Zhu Fakuang, whose secular surname was Gao, was a native of Xiapi who resided in Wuxing. Having lost both parents early, he was known for his filial piety in serving his stepmother. His family was poor with no savings, and he often tilled the fields personally along the dikes to provide for her with a cheerful countenance. When his mother died, he conducted the mourning with complete propriety. After the mourning period ended, he left the household and served the śramaṇa Zhu Tanyin as his master. Yin was bright and discerning, with virtuous practice; Kuang served him with utter sincerity until he received full ordination. His demeanor and conduct were lofty, standing out far above the crowd; he lived simply and was content in his vocation, with profound aspiration and conduct. Once when Yin was critically ill, Kuang prayed with sincere repentance for seven days and seven nights; on the seventh day, a five-colored light suddenly appeared shining upon the door of Yin's chamber, and Yin felt as though someone were pressing on him with a hand, whereupon his ailment was cured.
