Later, he took leave of his master to travel far and wide, searching extensively for the essentials of the scriptures, and returned to dwell in a stone chamber on Mount Qingshan in Yuqian. He always regarded the Lotus Sūtra as the doctrine of uniting the three [vehicles] and the Sūtra of Immeasurable Life as the cause for the Pure Land; he constantly recited these two texts, lecturing when there was an audience and chanting when alone. When Xie An was in Wuxing, he went purposely to pay his respects, but the mountain dwelling was secluded and obstructed, so that carriages could not pass; thereupon [Xie An] unhitched his carriage at the mountain peak and walked on foot across the ridges. Emperor Jianwen of the Jin sent Qu Anyuan, the grand administrator of Tangyi, with an imperial edict to inquire after his health and to consult him about an inauspicious star, requesting Kuang to exert his efforts. Kuang replied to the edict, saying: "In the past, when Duke Jing of Song cultivated blessings, the inauspicious star moved its position. Since Your Majesty's glorious reign began, government and penal laws have been properly coordinated. The burden of the empire is heavy, and the ten thousand affairs are pressing; a deviation of a hair's breadth leads to an error of a thousand li. You should solely cultivate virtuous governance diligently in order to atone for Heaven's reprimand; this impoverished monk will certainly reply with full sincerity to the throne, fearing only that my intention exceeds my strength." Thereupon he held a fast and repentance with his disciples, and after a short while the disaster subsided.
