Vighna was originally a man of Tianzhu. For generations his family had revered non-Buddhist ways, regarding fire worship as orthodox. At that time, a śramaṇa from Tianzhu who practiced and studied the Hīnayāna and performed many supernatural techniques, while on a long journey as evening approached, wished to lodge at Vighna's house for the night. Since Vighna's family served non-Buddhist ways and was suspicious and jealous of the sons of the Śākya, they placed him outside the gate to sleep in the open air. In the night, the śramaṇa secretly worked incantations, causing the fire worshipped by Vighna's family to suddenly be extinguished. Thereupon the whole family came out together, prostrated themselves, and invited the śramaṇa into the house to make offerings to him. The śramaṇa again used incantations to cause the fire to reignite. Seeing that the śramaṇa's supernatural power surpassed his own, Vighna immediately gave rise to great faith and delight in the Buddhadharma. He then abandoned what he had originally worshipped, went forth from household life into the Way (pravrajyā), and relied on this śramaṇa as his preceptor (upādhyāya). He received and studied the Tripiṭaka, was exquisitely versed in the four *Āgama*s, and traveled to convert various states, none of which failed to revere him.
