Zhu Dharmarakṣa—which translates as 'Fahu' (Guardian of the Dharma)—was originally from the Yuezhi, with the ancestral surname Zhi, and his family had dwelt for generations in Dunhuang Commandery. At eight years of age, he entered the religious life, serving the foreign śramaṇa Zhu Gaozuo as his master. He memorised ten thousand words of sūtras each day, retaining them as soon as they met his eyes. By nature pure and admirable, his practice was rigorous and ascetic, and his resolve devoted to love of learning: he travelled ten thousand leagues in search of masters. He thus read widely in the Six Classics and immersed his mind in the seven categories of books; yet worldly affairs, praise, and blame never troubled his heart.
