Master Dao'an said: 'As for the texts Dharmarakṣa produced, if one truly obtains those from his own hand and eye, their main threads are sure to be correct. Although the sūtras he translated were not eloquent, subtle, gentle, or polished, they were broad, penetrating, joyous, and fluent, and particularly adept in the unarisen. Relying on wisdom rather than literary ornament, in their plainness they are close to the original.' Such was the praise he received. Dharmarakṣa's family had dwelt in Dunhuang for generations, and his transforming guidance was all-pervasive; the people of the time all called him the 'Dunhuang Bodhisattva.'
