At that time there was the pure-believing layman Nie Chengyuan, who was discerning and talented, devout in spirit, and dedicated to the Dharma. Whenever Master Dharmarakṣa produced sūtras, he would frequently assist in correcting the sentences. When the Chaoriming jing was first translated, it was rather redundant and cumbersome; Chengyuan pruned and corrected it, yielding the two fascicles currently circulating. His editorial decisions were generally of this nature. Chengyuan had a son, Daozhen, who was also proficient in Sanskrit learning; this father and son produced phrasing that was elegant and apt, free of archaisms. In addition, Zhu Fashou, Chen Shilun, Sun Bohu, Yu Sheya, and others all received Dharmarakṣa's instructions together, taking brush in hand to carefully proofread.
