Śrīmitra—which translates as 'Auspicious Friend'—was a man of the Western Regions, called 'Gaozuo' (High Seat) by the people of the day. Tradition says he was the son of a king and ought to have inherited the throne, but he abdicated the kingdom to his younger brother, secretly conforming to the model of Taibo. Soon after, his awakened mind was divinely inspired, and he became a śramaṇa. Śrīmitra's natural temperament was lofty and lucid, his manner and bearing transcendent; merely confronting him, one felt he rose far above worldly things.
