Kālayaśas, translated as "Famous at the Time," was a man of the Western Regions. He was firm and upright by nature, had few desires, was skilled in reciting the Abhidharma, and read widely in the Vinaya treatises; he was also versed in and synthesized many other sūtras. Although he was thoroughly versed in all three baskets (Tripiṭaka), he specialized in the gate of dhyāna. Whenever he entered contemplation, he would sometimes not rise for seven days, constantly propagating the Dharma across various countries through the correct absorption of samādhi. At the beginning of the Yuanjia era, he braved the Desert of Moving Sands from afar and gathered at the imperial capital. Emperor Taizu (Wen) deeply marveled at him.
