Śubhakarasiṃha's nature loved tranquility and simplicity, quieting contemplation and harmonizing his spirit; from time to time he opened dhyāna contemplation and encouraged beginners. For those who beheld his deportment, lotus flowers bloomed within their field of vision; for those who received his instructions, sweet dew moistened their heart's field, and daily there were individuals of transcendent awakening and clarity. Among fellow companions of the Dharma who requested an audience, he venerated only the Elder Tripiṭaka Master Ratnacinta; with all others, he observed the etiquette of master and disciple. As for Dhyāna Master Yixing, who was revered by the monarchs and turned to by the worthy of the time, whenever he had something unresolved beyond samādhi and prajñā regarding the subtleties of yin and yang, he also consulted and received instruction from Śubhakarasiṃha before putting it into practice.
