The śramaṇa Daoyin had the secular surname Hou and was a native of Puyang. Endowed with blessings and dwelling in purity, he was gifted with brilliance and free wisdom; in the years of his infancy his refined manner was full of wonders, and in his boyhood his extraordinary bearing flourished exceptionally. In his filial devotion and affection, and in his compassionate and compliant manner, he followed his inclination and exhausted his feelings. When he was just seven years old, he suffered the loss of his mother; he abstained from all food and drink, nearly destroying his life. His adult-like virtues were praised throughout the prefecture and village. After concluding the mourning, thinking of repaying the boundless kindness of his parents, his determination to leave home could not be moved by anyone. He went to Lingyan Temple to seek a master and study the recitations; in less than ten days, he mastered two cases of the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra*. The entire assembly was astonished, calling him a divine child. From the time he had his hair shaved, he honed his conduct, studied the *Exposition of Meanings* (*Yizhang*), and lectured on the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra*, and senior elders and renowned figures were all filled with admiration.
