15.21

遂辭雲巖。雲巖曰。什麼處去。師曰。雖離和尚未卜所止。曰莫湖南去。師曰無。曰莫歸鄉去。師曰無。曰早晚却來。師曰。待和尚有住處即來。曰自此一去難得相見。師曰。難得不相見。又問雲巖。和尚百年後忽有人問還貌得師真不。如何祇對。雲巖曰。但向伊道即遮箇是。師良久。雲巖曰。承當遮箇事大須審細。師猶涉疑。後因過水覩影大悟前旨。因有一偈曰。

He then took leave of Yunyan. Yunyan said, "Where are you going?" The Master said, "Although I am leaving you, upādhyāya, I have not yet decided where I will stay." Yunyan said, "Are you not going to Hunan?" The Master said, "No." Yunyan said, "Are you not going back to your native village?" The Master said, "No." Yunyan said, "Return sooner or later." The Master said, "I will come as soon as you, upādhyāya, have a dwelling place." Yunyan said, "Once you leave this time, it will be hard for us to see each other." The Master said, "It will be hard not to see each other." He also asked Yunyan, "After a hundred years have passed, upādhyāya, if someone suddenly asks, 'Can you depict the Master's true likeness or not?' how should I respond?" Yunyan said, "Just tell him, 'Just this is it.'" The Master remained silent for a long time. Yunyan said, "To undertake this matter, you must be extremely meticulous." The Master was still beset by doubt. Later, when crossing a stream and seeing his reflection, he was thoroughly awakened to the previous purport. Thereupon, he composed a verse:
