Chan Master Sengmi of Shenshan in Tanzhou. While the Master was sieving flour at Nanquan's place, Nanquan asked, "What are you doing?" The Master said, "Sieving flour." Nanquan said, "Are you sieving with your hands or sieving with your feet?" The Master said, "Please, Upādhyāya, you say it." Nanquan said, "Remember this clearly; later, when you meet an adept with clear eyes, just bring it up like this." (Yunyan said in his place, "Only one without hands or feet can sieve.") The Master was crossing a river with Dongshan. Dongshan said, "Do not misstep." The Master said, "If I misstep, I cannot cross." Dongshan said, "What about not misstepping?" The Master said, "Crossing the river together with the elder." One day he was hoeing the tea garden with Dongshan. Dongshan threw down his hoe and said, "I am exhausted today, with not a bit of strength left." The Master said, "If you have no strength, how could you speak like this?" Dongshan said, "You take having strength to be it." Grand Councilor Pei asked a monk, "When offerings are made to the Buddha, does he eat them or not?" The monk said, "It is like the Grand Councilor sacrificing to family spirits." The Grand Councilor recounted this to Yunyan. Yunyan said in his place, "However many kinds of food there are, just serve them all at once." Yunyan then asked the Master, "What about after they are served all at once?" The Master said, "Close the alms bowl afterwards." Yunyan approved. A monk asked, "What is it when one who hears nothing is said to listen to the sūtras?" The Master said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I want to understand." The Master said, "You do not yet understand listening to sūtras." A monk asked, "What about when the first stage does not see the second stage?" The Master said, "Could you be mistaken? What stage are you in?" A postulant asked, "I beg for a word from the Master regarding the matter of birth and death." The Master said, "When have you ever come or gone in birth and death?" The postulant said, "I do not understand, please speak, Master." The Master said, "If you do not understand, you must go and die once."
