20.36

華州草菴法義禪師。問如何是祖師西來意。師曰。爛炒浮漚飽滿喫。問擬心即差動念即乖。學人如何進道。師曰。有人常擬為什麼不差。曰即今事如何。師曰。早成差也。

Chan Master Cao'an Fayi of Huazhou. [A monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?"
The Master said, "Thoroughly fry floating foam and eat your fill."
[A monk] asked, "'To intend in mind is to err; to stir a thought is to stray.' How should the student make progress on the Path?"
The Master said, "Someone is always intending; why does he not err?"
[The monk] said, "How is the matter right now?"
The Master said, "You have already made an error."
