20.9

潭州水西南臺和尚。僧問。如何是此間一滴水。師曰。入口即擭出。問如何是西來意。師曰。靴頭線綻。問祖祖相傳未審傳箇什麼。師曰。不因闍梨問老僧亦不知。

Upādhyāya Shuinan Nantai of Tanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the single drop of water here?" The master said, "Once it enters the mouth, it is seized and pulled out." [A monk] asked, "What is the meaning of [the Patriarch's] coming from the West?" The master said, "The thread at the tip of the boot has burst." [A monk] asked, "The patriarchs transmitted it to one another; may I ask, what did they transmit?" The master said, "Were it not for your asking, the old monk would not know either."
