21.45

襄州鷲嶺明遠禪師初參長慶。長慶問曰。汝名什麼。師曰。明遠。慶曰。那邊事作麼生。師曰。明遠退兩步。慶曰。汝無端退兩步作麼。師無語。長慶代云。若不退步爭知明遠。師乃喻旨。師住後僧問。無一法當前應用無虧時如何。師以手卓火。其僧因爾有悟。

Zen Master Mingyuan of Jiuling in Xiangzhou first called upon Changqing. Changqing asked, "What is your name?" The master said, "Mingyuan." Changqing said, "What about the matter over there?" The master said, "Mingyuan retreats two steps." Changqing said, "Why do you retreat two steps for no reason?" The master had no words. Changqing spoke in his place: "If one does not retreat, how could one know Mingyuan?" The master then understood the purport. After the master took up residence, a monk asked, "When not a single dharma is present before one, and responsive functioning is without lack, how is it?" The master poked the fire with his hand. Because of this, the monk attained awakening."
