23.139

房州開山懷晝禪師。僧問。作何行業即得不違千聖。師曰。妙行無倫匹情玄體自殊。問有耳不臨清水洗。無心誰為白雲幽。師曰。無木掛千金。曰掛後如何。師曰。杳杳人難辨。

Chan Master Huaizhou of Kaishan in Fangzhou. A monk asked, 'What actions and deeds will allow one not to violate the thousand sages?' The master said, 'Wondrous deeds have no peer; profound feeling naturally sets the substance apart.' [The monk] asked, 'Having ears, one does not approach clear water to wash them; having no mind, who makes the white clouds secluded?' The master said, 'Having no wood to hang a thousand pieces of gold.' [The monk] said, 'How is it after hanging it?' The master said, 'Faint and distant, hard for people to discern.'
