23.17

廬州南天王永平禪師。僧問。如何是西來意。師曰。不撒沙。問如何是南天王境。師曰。一任觀看。曰如何是境中人。師曰。且領前話。問久戰沙場為什麼功名不就。師曰。只為眠霜臥雪深。曰恁麼即罷息干戈束手歸朝去也。師曰。指揮使未到爾作。

Chan Master Yongping of Nantianwang in Luzhou. A monk asked, “What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?”
The master said, “Not scattering sand.”
[A monk] asked, “What is the realm of Nantianwang?”
The master said, “Look as you please.”
[The monk] said, “What about the person in the realm?”
The master said, “Just take in the previous words.”
[A monk] asked, “Having fought long on the battlefield, why has no merit or fame been achieved?”
The master said, “Just because of sleeping in frost and lying deep in snow.”
[The monk] said, “Then one should cease weapons and return to the imperial court with bound hands.”
The master said, “The commander has not yet arrived to give you orders.”
