Chan Master Yiyin of Luoshan in Fuzhou ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying: “If one is a guest at the gate of an ancestral teacher, one must not blame Luoshan. Take care.” A monk asked, “According to an ancient saying, ‘Ever since I recognized the road of Caoxi, I realized that birth and death are not related.’ Not asking about Caoxi, what is the road of Luoshan?” The Master opened both hands. The monk said, “If so, then when one road is passable, all roads are likewise.” The Master said, “What all roads?” The monk stepped forward and stood there. The Master said, “The wondrous crane is beyond the mist and clouds; the dull bird does not leave its nest.” The monk asked, “According to the teachings, it is said: ‘In accordance with the Dharma body, all phenomena are entirely still; following the function of wisdom, all phenomena arise together.’ What is ‘all phenomena are entirely still’?” The Master said, “What is there?” The monk asked, “What is ‘all phenomena arise together’?” The Master said, “Rope-bed and chair.”
