24.31

郴州太平院清海禪師。僧問。古人道不從請益得。祖師為什麼道誰得作佛。師曰。悟了方知。問從上宗乘次第指授。未審今日如何舉唱。師曰。白雲透出深洞裏。名華異草嶺頭生。問如何是句中人。師曰。好辨。

Chan Master Qinghai of Taiping Cloister in Chenzhou. A monk asked, "The ancients said that it is not obtained through seeking instruction. Why did the Ancestral Master say, 'Who can become a Buddha?'" The Master said, "Only after awakening do you know." [The monk] asked, "The ancestral vehicle from of old has been pointed out and conferred in sequence; I wonder how it is raised and proclaimed today?" The Master said, "White clouds emerge from the deep cave; famous flowers and rare herbs grow on the mountain peak." [The monk] asked, "Who is the person within the phrase?" The Master said, "Distinguish well."
