24.74

處州涌泉究和尚。師上堂良久曰。還有虎狼禪客麼。有則放出一箇來。時有僧才出。師曰。還知喪命處麼。曰學人咨和尚。師曰。什麼處去也。問獅子未出窟時如何。師曰。抖㖃地。曰獅子出窟後如何。師曰。蓋天蓋地。曰欲出不出時如何。師曰。一切人辨不得。問向去事如何。師曰。俊鷂亦迷蹤。

Upādhyāya Jiu of Yongquan in Chuzhou ascended the hall, and after a long silence said, "Are there any tiger-and-wolf Chan practitioners? If there are, let one out!" At that time a monk just stepped forth. The Master said, "Do you know where life is lost?" The monk said, "The student inquires of the Upādhyāya." The Master said, "Where have you gone?" The monk asked, "What is it like before the lion has left its den?" The Master said, "Shaking the earth." The monk said, "What about after the lion leaves the den?" The Master said, "Canopying heaven, covering earth." The monk said, "What is it like when it is about to leave, yet does not leave?" The Master said, "No one can discern it." The monk asked, "What about the matter going forward?" The Master said, "Even a spirited falcon loses its track."
