Master Hanshan of Tiantai originally had no clan or surname. Seventy li west of Shifeng County were the two crags, Cold Crag (Hanyan) and Bright Crag (Mingyan); he took his name because he resided in Cold Crag. His appearance was withered and emaciated, and his cloth garments were ragged. He wore a birchbark cap and dragged large wooden clogs. From time to time he would come to Guoqing Temple to take the monks' leftover food and vegetable scrapings from Shide and eat them. Sometimes he walked slowly under the corridors; at other times he shouted and railed toward the empty sky. When the temple monks drove him off with staves, he would turn around, clap his hands, laugh loudly, and leave. Although his words sounded mad, they held profound meaning. One day Fenggan said to him, "If you travel with me to Mount Wutai, you are my peer; if you do not go with me, you are not my peer." [Hanshan] said, "I will not go." Fenggan said, "You are not my peer." Hanshan then asked, "What are you going to Mount Wutai to do?" Fenggan said, "I am going to pay homage to Mañjuśrī." [Hanshan] said, "You are not my peer!" After Fenggan passed away, Lord Lüqiu entered the mountain to visit them. Seeing Hanshan and Shide sitting around the hearth talking and laughing, Lüqiu inadvertently made prostrations before them. The two shouted and scolded repeatedly. The temple monks said in shock, "Why does a high official bow to madmen?" Hanshan then seized Lüqiu's hand, laughed, and said, "Fenggan is a blabbermouth!" After a long while, he let go of him. From then on, Hanshan and Shide went hand-in-hand out the pine gate and never entered the temple again. Lüqiu went again to Cold Crag to pay homage, presenting clothing and medicine. The two worthies shouted loudly at him: "Thief! Thief!" and then drew themselves back into a crevice in the crag, saying only, "We tell all of you: make effort, each of you!" The rock crevice suddenly closed together. Mourning and longing for them, Lüqiu ordered the monk Daoqiao to seek out their remaining belongings. In the woods, they found verses inscribed on leaves, as well as poems written on the walls of village cottages, totaling more than three hundred pieces, which were circulated throughout the world. Chan Master Benji of Caoshan wrote a commentary on them, entitled 'Commentary on the Poems of Master Hanshan'.
