Upādhyāya Budai (Cloth Bag) of Fenghua County in Mingzhou: his family and clan are not clearly known. He called himself Qici. His appearance was stout and corpulent, with a furrowed brow and a protruding belly. His speech was unpredictable, and he slept wherever he happened to be. He always carried a cloth sack on a staff; all his personal requisites were kept inside it. Entering markets, shops, and settlements, he would beg for whatever he saw. When fish, cured meat, vinegar, or minces were given to him, the moment they touched his mouth, he would take a small portion and toss it into the sack. People of the time called him Master Budai of Changtingzi. He once lay in snow without any snow clinging to his body; people marveled at him for this. If he begged for a merchant's goods, they would sell out. When he indicated good or bad fortune to people, it inevitably came true without error. When rain was about to fall, he would wear wet straw sandals and walk hurriedly on the roads; during severe droughts, he would drag high-toothed wooden clogs and sleep on market bridges with his knees drawn up. The local residents used this as a reliable sign. A monk was once walking ahead of the master. The master tapped the monk on the back. The monk turned around. The master said, "Beg you for one copper coin." The monk said, "If you can speak [the Way], I will give you one coin." The master laid down his cloth bag, crossed his hands, and stood still. Upādhyāya Bailu asked, "What is the cloth bag?" The master immediately set down the cloth bag. [Bailu] also asked, "What is the matter concerning the cloth bag?" The master shouldered it and walked away. Former Upādhyāya Baofu asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddhadharma?" The master set down the cloth bag and crossed his hands. Baofu said, "Is it only like this, or is there something further transcendental?" The master shouldered it and walked away. The master was standing in a marketplace. A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya doing here?" The master said, "Waiting for someone." [The monk] said, "He has come! He has come!" (Upādhyāya Rou of Guizong said alternatively: "Come, let us go back.") The master said, "You are not that person." [The monk] asked, "Who is that person?" The master said, "Beg you for one copper coin." The master had a song that said:
