27.28

外道問佛云。不問有言不問無言。世尊良久。外道禮拜云。善哉世尊。大慈大悲開我迷雲令我得入。外道去已阿難問佛云。外道以何所證而言得入。佛云。如世間良馬見鞭影而行（玄覺徵云。什麼處是世尊舉鞭處。雲居錫云。要會麼。如今歸堂去復是阿誰。東禪齊拈云。什麼處是外道悟處。眾中道世尊良久時。便是舉鞭處。恁麼會還得已否）。

A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, "I do not ask about what has words, nor do I ask about what has no words." The World-Honoured One remained silent for a good while. The non-Buddhist bowed and said, "How excellent, World-Honoured One! With great kindness and great compassion you have cleared away my clouds of delusion and allowed me to gain entry." After the non-Buddhist left, Ānanda asked the Buddha, "What did the non-Buddhist realise, that he spoke of gaining entry?" The Buddha said, "Like a fine steed in the world that gallops upon seeing the shadow of the whip." (Xuanjue interrogated, "Where was the place the World-Honoured One raised the whip?" Yunju Xi said, "Do you want to understand? Who is it that is returning to the hall right now?" Dongchan Qi appraised, "Where was the place of the non-Buddhist's enlightenment? In the assembly they say that when the World-Honoured One remained silent for a good while, that was indeed raising the whip. Can one understand it like that or not?")
