The king of Kashmir took a sword and went before the Venerable Siṃha, asking, "Master, have you attained the emptiness of the aggregates?" The Master said, "I have already attained the emptiness of the aggregates." The king said, "Having already attained the emptiness of the aggregates, are you free from birth and death?" The Master said, "I am already free from birth and death." The king said, "Having already been freed from birth and death, if I beg for the Master's head, would you give it?" The Master said, "Even the body is not my own, how much less the head!" The king then severed it; white milk flowed out, and the king's arm fell off of itself. (Xuanjue interrogated, "Tell me, did he strike him or did he not strike him?" Xuansha said, "Big or small, the Venerable Siṃha could not take charge of his own head." Xuanjue further said, "In speaking thus, did Xuansha want someone to take charge, or did he not want someone to take charge? If one wants someone to take charge, then the aggregates are not empty. If one does not want someone to take charge, what was Xuansha's intention in speaking like this? Try to judge it and see!")
