In Guangnan there was a monk living in a hermitage. When the ruler of the country went out hunting, someone announced to the hermitage master, "The Great King has arrived; please rise." The master said, "Not only when the Great King arrives—even if the Buddha arrives, I will not rise." The King asked, "Is not the Buddha your teacher?" He said, "He is." The King said, "Seeing your teacher, why do you not rise?" (Fayan spoke in his place: "It is not enough to repay his kindness.")
