Chan Master Cao of Jinzhou one day invited Upādhyāya Mi to a vegetarian feast, but did not arrange a seat for him. When Mi arrived, he spread his sitting cloth and bowed. The master stepped down from the Chan bed. Mi then went straight to the master's seat and sat down. The master, instead, sat on the ground. When the meal was finished, Mi departed immediately. The attendant said, "Upādhyāya is admired and revered by everyone, yet today your seat was snatched away by another." The master said, "If he comes in three days, he may still be saved." As expected, Mi came after three days and said, "The other day, I was robbed by a thief." (A monk asked Jingqing, "What is the meaning of the ancient one being robbed by a thief?" Qing said, "He only saw the sharpness of the awl's point, but did not see the squareness of the chisel's head.")
