汝州首山懷志禪師。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。曰三尺杖子破瓦盆。問如何是佛。師曰。桶底脫。問從上諸聖有何言句。師曰。如是我聞。曰不會。師曰。信受奉行。

Chan Master Huaizhi of Shoushan in Ruzhou: A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?"
[The Master] said, "A three-foot staff smashes a broken earthenware basin."
[A monk] asked, "What is Buddha?"
The Master said, "The bottom falls out of the tub."
[A monk] asked, "What words and phrases have come down from the holy ones of old?"
The Master said, "'Thus have I heard.'"
[The monk] said, "I do not understand."
The Master said, "'Faithfully accept and uphold.'"
