10.24

廬山同安崇勝幼宗禪師。上堂拈拄杖示眾曰。拄杖子是體。擊禪床一下曰。這箇是用直得高低普見遠近皆聞。正當恁麼時且道是分不分。良久曰。楖栗橫挑華藏界。維摩掌上未為多。下座。

Chan Master Youzong of Chongshsheng at Tong'an on Mount Lu ascended the hall. Raising his staff, he showed it to the assembly and said, 'The staff is the substance.' Striking the meditation couch once, he said, 'This is the function, enabling high and low to see universally, and far and near to hear alike. Right at just such a time, tell me: is there distinction or no distinction?' After a pause he said, 'Holding the staff horizontally, it bears the Flower Treasury World; on Vimalakīrti's palm, it is not yet much.' He stepped down from the seat.
