Chan Master Weilin Wuwei of Jingshan in Hangzhou was a native of Huzhou. He first resided at Daming. A monk asked, "Whose tune does the Master sing? Whose ancestral style do you succeed?" The Master said, "Not before Dīpaṃkara, nor after Śākyamuni." [The monk] said, "Might you not be a descendant of Yuwang?" The Master said, "The peak of the Sacred Mountain is high; the waters of the Weilü are swift." [The monk] asked, "What is the house style of Daming?" The Master said, "Sitting with raised eyebrows atop the sacred luan bird; walking with lifted head amid the gorges of the yellow crane." [The monk] said, "I wonder what the meaning is?" The Master said, "If you understand, then understand right away; what meaning are you looking for?" The monk said, "Take care," and was about to leave. The Master said, "Listen to a gāthā: / The embers of wood-knot fire fade, white ashes fly; / Upon this old monk's body, it is white like snow. / Sitting darkly by the hearth, unknown to others; / On the western mountain, a gray gibbon cries to the bright moon. / You have been standing long."
