11.49

明州瑞巖義海禪師霅川胡氏子。造雲居法席。居問。甚麼物恁麼來。師於言下大悟。遂有頌曰。雲居甚麼物。問著頭恍忽。直下便承當。猶是生埋沒。出世住報本。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師曰。若到諸方。但道報本不解答話。問如何是和尚家風。師曰。無忌諱。曰忽遇觸忤又且如何。師曰。不解作客勞煩主人。問釋迦掩室於磨竭。淨名杜口於毘耶。未審如何示眾。師曰。汝不欲我開談。曰未曉師機。師曰。且退。問如何是無位真人。師曰。這裏無安排爾處。

Chan Master Yihai of Ruiyan in Mingzhou was a son of the Hu family of Zhechuan. He visited Yunju's Dharma assembly. Yunju asked, "What thing comes thus?" Under these words, the Master had a great awakening. He then composed a verse: "'What thing is Yunju?' / When questioned about it, my head went faint. / Taking it up right then and there, / I was still buried alive." When he came into the world to reside at Baoben, a monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "If you go to the various regions, just say that Baoben does not know how to answer questions." [A monk] asked, "What is the upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "No taboos." [The monk] said, "What if one suddenly offends you?" The Master said, "You do not know how to be a guest, troubling the host." [A monk] asked, "Śākya shut his room in Magadha; Vimalakīrti closed his mouth in Vaiśālī. I do not know how you instruct the assembly?" The Master said, "You do not want me to open my mouth in discourse." [The monk] said, "I do not understand the Master's dynamic functioning." The Master said, "Retire for now." [A monk] asked, "What is the true person of no rank?" The Master said, "There is no place here to accommodate you."
