11.50

明州廣慧志全禪師杭州衛氏子。上堂僧問。如何是衲僧本分事。師曰。爾莫鈍置我。僧禮拜。師曰。却是大眾鈍置闍梨。便下座。問賊不打貧兒家時如何。師曰。說向人也不信。僧曰。恁麼則禮拜而退。師曰。得箇甚麼。

Chan Master Zhiquan of Guanghui in Mingzhou was a son of the Wei family of Hangzhou. Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is a patch-robed monk's inherent duty?" The Master said, "Do not bring disgrace upon me." The monk bowed. The Master said, "It is rather the assembly that brings disgrace upon the ācārya." He then stepped down from the seat. [A monk] asked, "How is it when thieves do not rob a poor man's house?" The Master said, "Even if told to people, they would not believe it." The monk said, "Then I bow and withdraw." The Master said, "What did you get?"
