荊南府護國紹通禪師。僧問。如何是和尚家風。師曰。一瓶一鉢。云向上更有事也無。師曰有。云如何則是。師曰。拄杖子。云若不上來爭知如是。師便打。僧云錯。師曰。猶自口喃喃。

Chan Master Shaotong of Huguo in the superior prefecture of Jingnan. A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "One bottle, one bowl." The monk asked, "Is there still anything beyond this?" The Master said, "There is." The monk said, "What is it?" The Master said, "The staff." The monk said, "If I had not come forward, how could I know it is like this?" The Master struck him. The monk said, "Wrong!" The Master said, "Your mouth is still muttering."
