Chan Master Chongbian of Nanhua in Shaozhou. A monk asked, "Leaving aside the Patriarch's intention in coming from the West, please, Master, proclaim the very first phrase." The master said, "The dragon holding the dark jewel departs from the vast sea; the crane slanting its frosty feathers descends to the jade steps." The monk said, "A wheel of bright moon shines over the four seas completely clearly." The master said, "In the middle of the night, the seamless stupa is broken open; at dawn, Zhiji clutches his head and turns back." He then said, "Do you understand? When the five great elements are not yet distinct and the two polarities leave no trace, King Vairocana cannot glimpse it, and the hands of Great Compassion grope without a trace. Tell me, is it wondrous supernatural function, or is it fundamentally thus? If you understand it here, you immediately stride high upon the crown of Vairocana and sit atop the heads of the reward and transformation Buddhas. If you do not understand it here, you only know that affairs pass before your eyes, unaware that old age is coming upon your head. Bah!"
