14.22

處州南明仁壽善通禪師。僧問。如何是南明境。師曰。泉飛一帶雪。峯出半天雲。如何是境中人。師曰。策笻看鶴舞。坐石見雲歸。問如何是祖師西來意。師曰。登山千里月。度海一帆風。云未審意旨如何。師曰。言前有路句下無私。問龍未出洞時如何。師曰。佛眼覷不見。出洞後如何。師曰。興雲吐霧。

Chan Master Nanming Renshou Shantong of Chuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Nanming realm?" The master said, "A spring flies as a sash of snow; a peak emerges through clouds halfway up the sky." "What is the person in the realm?" The master said, "Leaning on a bamboo cane, watching cranes dance; sitting on a rock, seeing clouds return." The monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The master said, "Climbing the mountain, the moon of a thousand leagues; crossing the sea, a sail full of wind." The monk said, "What is the essential meaning?" The master said, "Before words, there is a path; beneath a phrase, there is no selfishness." The monk asked, "What about before the dragon has emerged from the cave?" The master said, "Even the Buddha's eye cannot catch sight of it." "What about after it has emerged from the cave?" The master said, "It raises clouds and breathes mist."
