Chan Master Shichang of Fahai in Chuzhou. A monk asked, "How does one penetrate the three kinds of illness and two kinds of light of the Dharma body?" The Master said, "Drawing a circle on the ground as a prison." The monk said, "Has the upādhyāya penetrated them or not?" The Master said, "No path to retreat." The monk said, "Rising by oneself and falling by oneself." The Master said, "The forehead hits the ground." [The monk] asked, "What is the real mark of all phenomena?" The Master said, "Bring it up once more." The monk said, "The Buddhas of the three periods cannot spit it out; the patriarchs of the six generations cannot swallow it down." The Master said, "The words are still ringing in my ears." He then said, "The city is clamorous; the void is quiet. Even though it is like this, motion and rest are one suchness; self and other are not two. The four seasons revolve, yet the nature of things is serene. Summer does not leave, yet winter arrives of itself; the wind is not cold, yet ice is chilly of itself. Past and present do not depend on the slightest hair. Who lacks and who has too much? The body has no dual functions. Venerable Chan monks, since the body has no dual functions, why did the dragon girl manifest eighteen transformations? Have you not seen: surfing the waves requires a wave-surfer!" Striking the staff, he stepped down from the seat.
